Computers are remarkable devices that should be made available to everyone; however, as Sterne points out in his article, they are not. It’s difficult for me to imagine how life would have been if I had grown up without a computer. “Computer literacy” wasn’t a term I cared much about growing up, but I definitely see the importance of it today. I would say that most jobs today require basic knowledge on how to work with computers. With media such as music, movies, and television shows becoming available online, life is becoming more and more convenient. It leads one to wonder what couldn’t be made available online. The internet is a wealth of knowledge that should be taken advantage of by every individual with access to it.
As a child, I never realized how many other children were unable to have the same experience that I did with computers. I now see the sad reality that many schools simply can’t afford it. I think it’s a shame that many minorities may never gain access to the internet. I believe that “The Apple Bill” would have been a great way to give children living in impoverished areas access to the internet. I think the argument that many students would be unaware of the computer at their school, anyway, was a poor argument against this bill. There were many ways to make children aware of something as vital as this. And, even though this would have been profitable for Apple, I think the good that would have come out of it would have been worth it. Having access to basically all of the information in the world is an incomparable experience that everyone deserves. It’s more than just convenient; it’s life-changing.
It’s difficult to describe cyberspace. It almost appears to be a place you can’t be judged because you don’t see people face-to-face. This is very inviting to some, especially those with low self-esteem. Although, others find it frustrating because it’s almost as if humans need something to judge. This problem was fixed through online pictures and Skype. Skype is particularly interesting because it’s probably the closest one can get to being face-to-face with someone without physically being there. Programs like Skype make you realize how incredible the internet really is. And yet, there are still some who don’t see the benefits it has to offer. Some can’t comprehend why you would want to “waste” time looking at someone through a computer screen or posting information for everyone to see. So, as exciting as advances in computer technology are for young adults, some of the older generations aren’t as thrilled. It is nice to see some people coming around, though. Hopefully, people will look at “computer literacy” as a requirement in life and come to appreciate all that computers have to offer. My hope is that, one day, every single person will be able to see the great benefits the internet has to offer and be in awe as I am every time I think about how incredible computers are.
