The first step I made was choosing a topic that interested me. I was originally going to interview three children from the Children's Hospital of Atlanta to see how they use media to spread awareness about their illness. I felt that this topic was very interesting and it related to my career goals, as I plan on entering the healthcare field. This topic, however, wasn't very feasible because of the hospital's restrictions. The second idea I came up with was to interview three users of Emory Secrets. Due to the fact that Emory Secrets doesn't post submissions that solicit participation in surveys or projects, this plan also fell through. The topic that I finally landed on was international students at Emory. This idea was both feasible and interesting to me. At Emory, I've made friends with many international students and I wanted to learn more about their experiences in the U.S. and how their lives have changed after coming to school in the states. Also, having transferred to Emory from a community college, I wanted to compare their transition to my own. One of my international friends here had mentioned to me that she regularly attends Emory's International Coffee Hour, so I decided to interview her and to go to the coffee hour and make friends with two other international students that I could interview. So, I did just that and it worked out very well.
After choosing my topic and my interviewees, I typed up some questions that I wanted to ask them. I started off with many questions, then narrowed it down to the ones that I really wanted to ask. After I had all my questions ready, I set up times with the interviewees to do the interviews. I was able to meet up with them fairly quickly after coming up with all my questions. During my first interview, it took a couple of takes to get it right. After that one, though, I was able to use the first take with my other two interviews, since I had gotten better at things like holding the camera steady and not losing my place on the question list. After all of my interviews were completed, I used iMovie to edit them. The editing process took a very long time, especially since it was my first time using iMovie. I enjoyed making my voice-overs for the introduction and conclusion because it allowed me to say everything that I wanted to say on my topic. Overall, I was very pleased with my finished product.
